Custom Sawmilling
& Lumber
From customer-owned logs
to kiln-dried slabs, Rustic Roots provides the equipment, experience
and material options to help you get more from the wood.
Start With the Right Cut
Rustic Roots Warehouse processes many types of logs, lumber and rough-sawn slabs for homeowners, woodworkers, builders, contractors and other customers throughout the Rock Hill area.
We mill material for our own inventory and accept qualifying customer-owned logs for custom sawmilling. Whether you need lumber for a building project, slabs for furniture, kiln-dried material for woodworking or help processing a log with unusual size or character, we can help determine the best place to begin.
Turn Your Logs Into Usable Lumber
Bringing us a log allows you to preserve its value, character and history while transforming it into material that can be used for furniture, construction, woodworking or another future project.
Our standard sawmill accepts logs measuring:
Minimum length: 9 feet
Maximum length: 18 feet
Maximum diameter: approximately 30 inches
Standard custom-sawmilling prices range from $1.50 to $2.50 per board foot, depending on the material and required cuts.
Logs must be evaluated before milling. Size, species, condition, embedded metal and the type of cuts requested may affect whether a log can be accepted and what the final service will cost.
Big Logs. Wide Slabs. Greater Possibilities.
Some logs are simply too large for a standard sawmill. Our Lucas Mill and dedicated slabber allow Rustic Roots to process oversized material and produce slabs up to six feet wide.
This capability is especially useful for large-diameter logs, statement tables, countertops, mantels and other projects where the width and natural character of the wood are important.
Lucas Mill pricing varies according to the size of the log, the difficulty of the cuts and the requested finished dimensions.

Properly Dried. Ready for What’s Next.
Freshly milled wood contains moisture that must be reduced before the material is suitable for many interior, furniture and woodworking applications.
After leaving the sawmill, lumber and slabs are cleaned and carefully stacked with spacers—commonly called stickers—between each layer. These spacers promote airflow and help keep the material level and stable during the air-drying process.
Once the wood reaches an appropriate moisture level, it can be placed in our vacuum kiln. The kiln circulates heated air under vacuum pressure to draw moisture from the wood while helping reduce cracking and case hardening.
Our kiln can accommodate up to approximately 4,000 board feet at a maximum material length of 16 feet.
Customer kiln-drying service is available at:
- $1.50 per board foot
- 500-board-foot minimum
Drying time varies according to the species, thickness, starting moisture content and condition of the material.
Find the Right Material for Your Project
Rustic Roots maintains an evolving inventory of rough-sawn lumber, specialty wood and live-edge slabs processed on-site.
Depending on current availability, our selection may include:
- Cedar
- Cherry
• Black walnut
• Poplar
- Maple
- Oak
- Pecan
- Other locally available or specialty species
Many of our standard slabs are cut approximately two inches thick and range from 10 to 20 inches wide. We also carry larger material, including slabs approaching three feet wide and up to approximately 3½ inches thick.
Unfinished slabs are sold at species-specific board-foot pricing. Planing may also be available for an additional charge.
Because every log is different and inventory changes regularly, we encourage customers to visit or contact us about current species, sizes and availability.
Finding a Use for More of Every Log
We work to reduce waste and find practical uses for material throughout the milling process.
Cedar milling scraps may be useful for raised beds, siding, craft projects and other rustic or outdoor applications. Large scrap bundles are periodically available for $75 per bundle.
Bundles weigh approximately 1,500 pounds, and customers will need an open trailer or other suitable vehicle for pickup.
Availability varies.
What to Expect
Tell Us About Your Log or Project
Contact us with the approximate species, length, diameter and intended use of the material.
We Evaluate the Material
We determine whether the log is suitable for our standard sawmill or requires the Lucas Mill.
Choose the Cuts
We discuss the desired board or slab dimensions and any special project considerations.
Mill and Stack the Lumber
The log is processed, and the resulting lumber or slabs are prepared for pickup, air drying or future kiln drying.
Arrange Pickup or Drying
Customers can retrieve their material or discuss available drying services.
A storage fee of $50 per week applies to lumber awaiting pickup.
What Is a Board Foot?
A board foot is a standard measurement used to calculate the volume of lumber.
The basic formula is:
Thickness in inches × Width in inches × Length in inches ÷ 144 = Board feet
For example:
1 inch thick × 12 inches wide × 12 inches long = 1 board foot
Actual milling charges will depend on the volume of material, the type of cuts and the services required.
Let’s See What Your Wood Can Become
